The department offers a degree programme leading to the award of B.Eng. (Civil Engineering).
The general philosophy of Civil Engineering programme is that of education for capacity in order to satisfy individual and societal needs. The engineering graduate must not only gain knowledge of particular area of study, but should also develop ways of thinking and which are appropriate for use outside the educational system. Individual satisfaction stems from doing a job well through the exercise of personal capacity. The programme not only stresses the importance of analysis, criticism and acquisition of knowledge, but it also seek to imbibe in the graduate that culture which is concerned with the formulation and solution of problems, doing, making and organizing a culture which emphasizes craftsmanship, the design, construction and supervision of works and services and the day to day management of affairs
The programme is designed to fulfill the following objectives. To produce civil engineering graduates who are capable of exercising original thought and judgment in the application and development of engineering science and knowledge. To produce potent civil engineers who can be immediately employed in the existing and emerging positions in any civil engineering endeavor within and outside the Nigerian shores, or who can take up advanced studies and research in any chosen field of civil engineering any where in the world. To achieve these, the curriculum is designed to provide the civil engineering graduates a five years foundation not only in the basic sciences and mathematics but also in the traditional and non-traditional sectors of civil engineering. An equivalent of one-year industrial attachment at 200, 300 and 400 levels of the programme, exposes the student to both practical application of the engineering fundamentals and acquisition of necessary professional skills. Provisions are made for offering the students a number of optional courses to enable them have a certain degree of specialization in the area of structural, geotechnical, transportation, water resources, environmental and Geodetic Engineering.
The degree programme in civil engineering normally last five years, post school certificate or equivalent. For admission into the programme, candidates must satisfy the admission requirement of the University in general and that of the Department of Civil engineering in particular.
