Mrs. Oluwatoyin Oyeyemi Obinyan (Nee Afon)

Mrs. Oluwatoyin Oyeyemi Obinyan (Nee Afon) was born into the Afon family in Ogbomosho, Oyo State and got married into the Obinyan’s family in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State. Her early educations started at the Union Baptist Primary School in Oshogbo, Osun State where she obtained her first school certificate in 1993. Thereafter, she had her secondary school education in Oba Akinyele Memorial High School, Ibadan, and Islamic High School, Ibadan between 1996 and 2001.

In quest for higher education, Mrs O. O. Obinyan applied into the University of Ibadan where she obtained a Diploma degree in Library Studies in 2004. This instigated her love for the “book profession” and the desire to further her education in the Library and Information Science Profession. Consequently, she immediately enrolled into the degree programme as direct entry student in the same Department where she bagged a Bachelor’s degree in Library, Archival and Information Studies, with a Second Class (Hons) Upper Division in 2008. As part of the mandatory National Service Scheme for graduates, she embarked on her National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) Scheme between 2008 and 2009 in the University Library of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma. She further embarked on a postgraduate education and acquired a Masters’ degree in Library and Information Science from Delta State University, Abraka in 2014.

Mrs. Obinyan’s professional experience as a librarian started in 2007 when she served as Assistant Research librarian in the Development Policy Centre (DPC), Ibadan. She also gained internship experience in various capacities, as NYSC Intern and as a Graduate student (M.Sc.) intern, in Ambrose Alli University Library, Ekpoma, Edo State. In 2014, she was employed into the services of Ambrose Alli University as an Assistant Librarian in 2016 and was promoted to the rank of Librarian II with effect from October, 2019.

As an academic librarian in Ambrose Alli University library, Mrs Obinyan has occupied several leadership positions and has participated in various activities. She served as technical services librarian, also as the Acting Head of Readers Service Department in the university library between September 2017 and May, 2018. She was the Acting Head of the Electronic Library (Elibrary) Department from May 2018 to July 2021; thereafter she became the Acting Head of Law Library between July 2021 and November 2023, before she became the Librarian-in-Charge of the University Library. From October 2018 till date, she has been involved in teaching as Associate Lecturer both in the Department of Library and Information Science and in the Institute of Education. She also, teaches Use of library as part of the University’s General Studies Course.

As a Librarian, Mrs. Obinyan has been involved in various roles and taken up various responsibilities. She has served as University Librarian’s Representative to Faculty of Environmental Studies and Faculty of Life Sciences. She has served as member of various committees including Library Research and Development Committee, Library Annual Report Committee, Local Organising Committee NLA (Edo Chapter), ICT Board (Librarians Nominee), University’s Technical Committee on Plagiarism Check, and Library ICT committee. She has served as Chairperson in Library Research and Development Committee, Library Annual Report Committee and Committee on Review of Library Guide. She served as Desk-officer NgREN, (Institutional Repository Manager) till date.

Her love for education and scholarship has given her grant opportunities which have positively shaped her career as a professional librarian. In August 2021, she won the International Federated Library Associations (IFLA) 2021 Conference Registration Grant from American Library Association (ALA) International Round Table (IRRT). In 2020 she won the American Library Associations (ALCTS International Relation Committee) ALCTS Online Course Grant for Library Professionals from Developing Countries. Also, in April 2022, she won the International Conference grant from ASIS&T (Association for Information Science and Technology). She participated in Commonwealth of Learning, Canada-Coursera workforce recovery Program from June 2020 to March 2021. Also, she participated in the American Library Association’s IRRT 2022 International Librarians Networking Program (ILNP) 2022 Cohort. She has also participated in several online professional development programmes and in 25 webinars and online workshops/trainings.

She has presented papers in several local and international conferences. Written book chapters and published over 40 scholarly articles in reputable local, national and international journals. Mrs. O. O. Obinyan is certified to practice as a librarian by the Librarians’ Registration Council of Nigeria (LRCN) established under the Federal Ministry of Education Act. She is a member of some professional bodies like the Nigerian Library Association, Academic and Research Libraries (ALR), Nigeria Library Association Technology Section (NLATS), America Library Association (ALA), Association for Information science and Technology (ASIS&T) USA, International Association of Law Libraries (IALL) USA, and NAWACS.

Her hobbies include Reading, Travelling, Photography, and Meeting people. She is happily married to Dr. G. A. Obinyan – a union that is divinely fecund.
