Department of Philosophy

The Department of Philosophy offers programmes leaing to M. A. and Ph.D. in Philosophy with specialisation in the following ares

  1. African Philosophy
  2. Epistemology
  3. Metaphysics
  4. Ethics


The Master of Arts Degree programme in Philosophy is meant to:

  1.  Guide the students in doing an in-depth work in the main area of philosophy.
  2.  Enable the student to do some specialised research in the modern and contemporary methods in Philosophy.

Structure of the Programme
Each student must register for a minimum of 15 (fifteen Units) per Semester. Each student will be required to take five (5) courses of three (3) Units each. In addition, each candidate must submit a research project the length of which should be a minimum of 30,000 (thirty thousand words) which must be passed in an oral examination Every student shall be require to present at least a Seminar paper during the period of study.

Requirements for Graduation
A student must pass at least 3o units from Core Courses and Courses from his/her area of specialization, electives and a Research project.


As provided in the General regulation of the Graduate School, a Ph.D candidate will be required to present a Research proposal to the Department, pass a qualifying examination, present at least a seminar, submit and defend a Research Thesis.
