The 55th Inaugural Lecturer: Rev. Fr. Prof. John Afeagbokhai Onimhawo

Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma will on Thursday, 6th October, 2016 holds its 55th Inaugural Lecture to be delivered by Rev. Fr. Prof. John Afeagbokhai Onimhawo, Department of Religious Management and Cultural Studies, Faculty of Arts. The Lecture is titled: “THAT NATURE MAY TAKE ITS COURSE”.

The lecture which holds under the distinguished Chairmanship of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. I.A. Onimawo is scheduled to commence at 2.00 p.m. at the new University auditorium (TETFUND).

The Profile of the Inaugural Lecturer
Rev. Fr. Prof. John Afeagbokhai Onimhawo was born on 16th February, 1954 to Mr. Moses Onimhawo Enaboeyouno Imokhai and Mrs. Theresa Sametu Onimhawo in Afowa, Uzairue, and Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State. He had his primary education at Demonstration, A.T.C. School, Uzairue from 1961 to 1966. He completed his Primary Seven in 1967. Thereafter he was admitted into St. Paul’s Minor Seminary, Benin City in 1968 and graduated from the Seminary in 1972. He earned his London G.C.E. in 1973 and G.C.E. A/L 1978.

He proceeded to SS Peter and Paul Catholic Major Seminary at Bodija-Ibadan, Oyo State for his priestly formation. While there, he studied at the University of Ibadan where he obtained a Diploma in Religious Studies in 1977. With the quest for higher knowledge and to be more grounded in his Priestly call, he proceeded to Pontificia Urban Universititas Urbaniana (Pontifical Urban University), Rome, in 1979 where he bagged a First Class Honours Degree. He was ordained a Catholic Priest on 15th March, 1980.

His ordination and graduation with First Class Honours spurred him into higher academic pursuits. He went back to the University of Ibadan, where he bagged his Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in 1986 and his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in 1991.

In addition to his academic qualification, Rev.Fr. Prof. Onimhawo also has the following professional qualifications:

  1. Bendel State Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre Certificate, Olape – 1976.
  2. Nigeria Economic Welfare Services Limited (NEWS) Certificate, Benin City – 1981.

Rev. Fr. Prof. Onimhawo started his Priestly career as an Assistant Priest to St. Joseph’s Parish, Benin city where he doubled as the Secretary to the Bishop; 1980-1981. Later he became the Parish Priest at Ubiaja Parish, 1981 – 1983. Thereafter, he worked as Parish Priest in several towns around Edo state but spent more of the time around the Akoko-Edo axis of the State.

His academic career started as a Part-Time Lecturer with the College of Education, Igueben in 1982 and as a Part-Time Teacher in Ososo Grammar School, Ososo, Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of the then Bendel State in 1984.

Rev. Fr. Prof. John A. Onimhawo later joined the service of the then Edo State University now Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma as a Lecturer II in the year 1992 where he rose through the ranks to the position of a Reader on 1st October, 2001. He was later promoted to the position of a Professor on 1st October, 2006 having satisfied the necessary academic requirements.

Rev. Fr. Prof. Onimhawo is a renowned Priest and astute academic with several publications to his credit. He has 38 publications in Journals, 29 chapters in books and 10 authored books to his credit. A book and a journal are in the offing, already accepted for publication. He has presented several papers in both local and international Journals and at conferences, workshops and seminars. Rev. Fr. Prof. John A. Onimhawo is currently one of the most published Professors in the Faculty of Arts. He is an editor of several journals e.g. Iroro which is a Faculty Journal and Epha a Departmental Journal among others.

Rev. Fr. Prof. Onimhawo also has veritable wealth of experience in administration and has handled several administrative positions within the University amongst which are:

  • Departmental Examination Officer – 1997 – 2000.
  • Faculty of Arts Representative in U.A.B. – 1997 – 2000.
  • Head, Department of Religious Management and Cultural Studies – 2000 – 2002 and 2006 – 2010.
  • Vice-Chancellor’s Nominee, year 2000 Appraisal for Lecturer I and below.
  • Hall Master, Rev. Martins Hall – 2004 – 2008.
  • Chairman, Board of Governors, University Staff Schools- 2010.
  • Acting Dean, Faculty of Arts – 2011 – 2012.

Rev. Fr. Prof. Onimhawo also has in spite of his very tight ministerial schedule handled the internal and external assessment of several academic staff to Reader and Professorial positions within and outside the University. He has been internal and external examiner to Postgraduate programmes within and outside the University. He has also undertaken the supervision of long Essays or Dissertation/Theses of Undergraduates, Masters and Ph.D students. He has participated in several accreditation exercises in various Universities.

Rev. Fr. Prof. Onimhawo is a pace-setter with a knack for excellence. He has pursued his calling with zest and vigour and is one of the most respected ministers of God in Edo State in particular and Nigeria in general.

We congratulate, Rev. Fr. Prof. John Afeagbokhai Onimhawo and the entire Onimhawo family on this historic occasion of the 55th Inaugural Lecture of this great University.
