Gentlemen of the Press

I congratulate them for accepting to be honoured by the University with the Honorary Degrees of this University. There is no doubt that your esteemed presence will enrich the ceremony.

On Thursday, 13th July, 2017, as part of the activities for the 21st Convocation Ceremony. We shall host the 21st Convocation Lecture, titled: The Relevance of the Nigerian University System in National Development: The Paradigm must change. The Guest Lecturer is Prof. Olusegun Olusina Akinyinka, mni. It is going to be a robust academic feast.

Two thousand two hundred and sixty five (2,265) graduands would be awarded First Degrees, Forty (40) with Postgraduate Diploma, Seventy Six (76) with Masters Degrees while fourteen (14) graduands would be awarded with Doctorate Degrees. Thirty Seven (37) of the graduands are Medical doctors (MBBS).
At the moment the University has 28,792 students all engaged in serious intensive academic work in eleven faculties for the education of the minds and acquisition of skills that will make them useful to society. The focus is employability and relevance of the Degree.

In the last one year this University has embarked on initiatives to improve processes and procedures of teaching, learning and administration in order to cope and be relevant in the face of current global challenges and dynamic technological advances. To this end we have a greatly improved web presence, greater academic innovations, research and publications.

I am happy to announce that all the certificates of post-graduate graduands whose results have been approved by Senate up to 2015/2016 academic session are ready for collection. The backlog inherited from the past administration which includes more than 17,000 of such certificates have been processed and ready for collection. The delays which used to be experienced in the issuance of certificates is now a thing of the past. Graduands are advised to visit the University website www.aauekpoma.edu.ng to check for their names.

Our University has made several giant strides that has positioned it in a better light in the comity of Universities. We now run a paperless Senate (e-Senate). Results are uploaded on the internet as soon as they are approved by Senate. We now administer examination by Computer-based test(CBT) (so far limited to 100 and 200 levels). Transcripts can now be assessed on-line and a lot of the bottlenecks and frustrations incidental to bureaucracy, paper work and human impediments have been removed. Our University has been the first to successfully conduct students Union elections by electronic voting. Our SUG election are now conducted by E-voting.

Most social vices in Universities arise from frustration, non-recognition and idleness. A lot of activities have been introduced to engage the students beneficially, outside their normal academic work. There is increased regularity of Inaugural Lectures, Distinguished lectures, Faculty Lectures, Local and International Conferences and Inter-Faculty competitions. This has gone a long way to occupy students and prevent them from focusing on anti social activities etc. We have introduced the Vice-Chancellor’s Cup for various Inter-Faculty competitions. Very soon Ambrose Alli University will be the Mecca for Debates and Public speaking in Nigeria. We are employing students’ idle time for competitions in Debates, Public speaking, comedy, sports and religious activities.

I am happy to announce that as at today, we have improved in all the criteria by which we were ranked as the best State University in Nigeria.

Our alumni have continued to contribute meaningfully all over the world. We have set machinery in motion to follow up on our alumni worldwide so that we can statistically present the increased level of employability and relevance of our graduates.

Ambrose Alli is proud to have produced one of the 65 qualified neurosurgeons in Nigeria Ambrose Alli University has produced a very sizable number of the registered Architects in Nigeria. Most of Nigeria’s Medical Laboratory Scientists produced in the last ten years were trained in Ambrose Alli University. The same is the trend in our Faculties of Law, Engineering, Education, Life Sciences and Physical Sciences.

In our quest to shore up revenue, we have introduced University health bread and production of catfish. We have also expanded our poultry production and intend to venture into other aspects of agricultural enterprises.

We are therefore proud to announce that we have taken bold steps to fulfill the mandate of this University and this administration is fulfilling its vision of remaining the best State University and one of the ten best in Nigeria.

I also pray for journey mercies for those who will travel to Ekpoma to honour our invitation.

I immensely appreciate you for being part of this Press Briefing. I wish you God’s travelling mercies to your destination.

Prof. I.A. Onimawo
