AMBROSE ALLI UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF MEDICINE STILL SHINING

The College of Medicine, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma has produced another qualified neurosurgeon. He is Dr Mark Okhuelegbe.
Neurosurgery is a very specialized aspect of the medical field, with only few practitioners, because of the skills required and the difficulty in qualifying in that field. At the moment Nigeria has less than 70 Neurosurgeons trained from all over the world, out of the 75,000 medical doctors in the country.

A few years ago, Ambrose Alli University produced its first neurosurgeon and that was Dr Eghosa Morgan. Both him and Dr. Mark Okhuelegbe are Fellows of the Nigeria College of Surgeons (FNCS) and also Fellows of West Africa College of Surgeons (FWCS).
Interestingly Dr Mark Okheulegbe is the first in a family of four children, all medical doctors, and all graduated from Ambrose Alli University. His immediate younger sisters are twins ( Dr Mrs Odion Ebueburho and Dr Mrs Akhere Ernest –Ekwe). The baby of the house is Dr Mrs Augusta Orji-Okhuelegbe .

This information was received when the Exco of the Nigeria Medical Association led by its Chairman, Dr Harrison Omokhua, paid a courtesy visit to the Acting Vice - Chancellor Prof Osarhieme Benson Osadolor, on Tuesday 6th of July 2021. In his remark, Dr Harrison Omokhua congratulated the Acting Vice - Chancellor on his appointment and the astute and timely administrative interventions he displayed in some of the challenges being faced by the College of Medicine and the university. He added that Ambrose Alli University is becoming famous worldwide for producing exceptional well trained medical doctors who are making waves in foreign countries as far as Canada, United State of America, Europe, United Kingdom, South Africa and many other countries.

In his response, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, ably represented by Prof Sunny Arasomwan Adagbonyin, thanked the Chairman NMA for his kind words. He added that it is true that no AAU medical graduate has ever failed the qualifying examinations set by other countries’ Medical Boards to make them eligible to practice in their countries. He noted that Dr. Mark Okheulegbe is doing very well at Oweri Imo State.

The chairman NMA and his 10-man team, during the courtesy visit, invited the AVC, Prof. Osarhieme Benson Osadolor and all the Principal Officers to the AGM of the NMA taking place on Wednesday 7th and 8th July 2021.
