AMBROSE ALLI UNIVERSITY, EKPOMA AN ADDRESS OF THE VICE-CHANCELLOR, PROF. I.A. ONIMAWO ON THE OCCASION OF THE 64TH INAUGURAL LECTURE OF AMBROSE ALLI UNIVERSITY, EKPOMA TO BE DELIVERED BY PROF. U.S.U. AASHIPELOKHAI OF THE DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS ON THURSDAY, 27TH JULY, 2017, AT THE CORDELIA AGBEBAKU AUDITORIUM

It is with please that l welcome you all to the 64th Inaugural Lecture of our great University titled: "The Quest for Accelerated Accurate Results for Application."

Today, history is being made in this University as this is the First Inaugural Lecture to be delivered by the Department of Mathematics and the first to be delivered by the Faculty of Physical Sciences.
I, therefore, congratulate Prof. U.S.U. Aashipelokhai, the Department of Mathematics and the Faculty of Physical Sciences on this epoch-making event.

On behalf of the University Management, l express deep appreciation to the University Community for the resounding success of the 21st Convocation ceremony of the University which was held on the 14th and 15th July, 2017.

This is a glorious testimony of the individual and collective commitment of all Staff and Students. Our united and sincere efforts have started to bear fruits. We are well on the way to making our University one of the best in the country, despite all odds. I enjoin all staff and students to keep the spirit of fervent and effectual effort and teamwork aglow.

On Saturday, 22nd July, 2017, the final March of the First Prof. I.A. Onimawo Cup for Inter-Faculty Football Tournament was held. The Faculty of Engineering won the Cup with a cash prize of N200,000. The Faculty of Management Sciences was placed second with a cash prize of N150,000, while the Faculty of Life Sciences was placed third with a cash prize of N100,000. The tournament brought out the best in football in our students. This tournament amongst other gains afforded the University a golden opportunity for talents hunt. From the tournament a team is being selected to represent AAU in the United Nations World Youth Day Football Tournament to be held at Abuja in August 2017. Other teams to play at this tournament are the Arewa Youth Football team and the Ohaneze Youth football team. Indeed, Ambrose Alli University is making waves.

The Inter-hostels and Inter-Faculty Students’ Debates and Public Speaking Competition is currently on-going. The final match will be held today. Again, amongst other gains the competition has afforded students the opportunity to display and sharpen their talents in debating and Public speaking, which will improve their self esteem and self confidence. The best among the Debaters would represent the University in the Inter-University Debates competitions coming up in September 2017 and on the international level, they would represent the University in Cameroon in December, 2017. Indeed, AAU is on its way to becoming the Mecca for Debating and Public Speaking.
I want to specifically applaud the students union for the initiative to empower the students to perform better at examination and for hand skills to help them in life. The students union is organizing seminars on CBT examination. Further skill acquisition training organized by the students union is going on. I encourage students to seize every such opportunity to improve themselves.

Our University has greatly increased its momentum in academic activities. There is hardly any week seminars, symposia or conferences are not organized. This week, for instance, the National Association of Women Academics in Collaboration with Medical women Association of Nigeria has organized an Adolescent Summit for the sensitization of impressionable youths on deviant health behavior to benefit parents and teachers of adolescents and pupils of about 20 secondary schools in Ekpoma and environ. This is a corporate social responsibility response from this University.

Also, this week the American Society of Microbiology organized a Virtual Workshop to improve responsibility of research for the good of mankind.
I encourage Departments and Faculties that have not keyed into this vision of increased academic activities on campus to do so. None should be left out and none should become irrelevant in this fast-paced world of technological advances.

Our University library has been repositioned to provide assistance to facilitate research, publications and web presence. Through the University library, resources from Oxford University, NGREM and WACREM, which provide international linkage services, are available to all staff. By constant activities on these platforms, a researcher gets an ID, in which case, he becomes known by researchers worldwide, and collaboration and synergy in research facilitated. For all those who have the will, our University library can provide the way.
Finally, l thank all those who joined me in the celebration of my 60th birthday. May God bless you all.

Once again, l congratulate Prof. U.S.U. Aashikpelokhai and his family on this occasion of his presentation of the 64th in the Inaugural Lecture series of the Ambrose Alli University.

Popularly called ‘Brosun’ by friends and admirers, Professor Asomwan Sonnie Adagbonyin, the 63rd Inaugural Lecturer of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, Nigeria, hails from Evboesi in Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State. He is the first son and second child of Late Pa Wilfred Amadin and Late Madam Margaret Igbinokhuo Adagbonyin, nee Imasuen. He was very creative and restless as a child and tried his hands on a wide variety of constructions: battery-powered lights, motor-cars, communication gadgets, etc. Encouraged by his father who gave him a constant supply of newspapers and books, he wrote several drama, short story sketches, and doodled a lot. He started writing full short stories at the age of 11, and at the age of 12, he enjoyed his proudest moment when he was called out in his Form One by his college principal at the morning assembly and commended for a short story he wrote for the Nigerian Observer which came out in that morning’s edition.

Journal Rationale and Guidelines

Among the Esan people of Southern Nigeria, ewanlen connotes wisdom, reasonableness and sensibility.  Hence an Esan elder, a man of epistemic competence, a morally sound mind and a highly cerebral custodian of the traditions and thought systems of the people is referred to as an owanlen.  Thus, when the Board of Studies of the premier Philosophy Department in the Esan region of Southern Nigeria reached a decision to launch a departmental journal of philosophy, the word ewanlen. Was picked as apt and catching enough to represent the goals of the journal and to signal where it has emerged from Ewanlen: A Journal of Philosophical Inquiry is so named for three reasons: first, it is the premier journal of philosophy from the Esan region: second, its title connotes, a strong interest in African philosophy and the philosophy of culture in general; and third, the word ‘ewanlen’ carries with it the very thrust of philosophical inquiry in all its ramification and diversity.

Ewanlen is an annual journal of philosophy that publishes every September 30 thoroughly reviewed and highly scholarly essays in any branch of philosophical inquiry.  Essays that do not reflect the rigour of philosophy would not be published.  All submissions are to come in not later than the 31st of July of each year. A submitted article for review must not exceed 7,000 words.  The journal uses the note and bibliography form of the Chicago Referencing Style (16th Ed.). Accepted papers would be made available online at the University’s website.  Authors will be made to pay a modest publication and journal copy fee of N20,000.00 only or its equivalent to a designated bank account of the Department prior to publication.
