THE 104TH INAUGURAL LECTURE

Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma will on Thursday November  30th 2023 holds its 104th inaugural Lecture. It will be delivered by Prof. (Mrs) Regina Esosa Ohenhen, a Professor of Food/Industrial Microbiology.  The Lecture is titled “Microbes your inevitable partners: an Amazing symbiosis”.  The Lecture which holds under the distinguished Chairmanship of Prof. Asomwan Sonnie Adagbonyin is scheduled to commence by 2:30 pm at Pastor Chris Oyakhilomen Auditorium.

A PROFILE OF PROF. (MRS) REGINA ESOSA OHENHEN

Prof. (Mrs) Regina Esosa Ohenhen  was born on August 21st, 1970 to the family of Late Mr J.E.I Omorogbe and Mrs A.E. Omorogbe. She hails from Oredo Local government area of Edo State.

Prof (Mrs) Ohenhen  attended Ivbiore Primary school, Ukhegie, Benin city, from 1976 to 1981 when she obtained her first school leaving certificate. She then attended Federal Government Girls College Benin City, where She obtained her secondary school certificate in 1986. She proceeded to the then Bendel State University Ekpoma where she obtained her Bachelor’s degree (BSc) in Microbiology in 1991 with a Second class (Upper division). She did her National Youth Service Corp in Sokoto State in 1992. Prof (Mrs) Ohenhen attended the famous University of Ibadan and obtained her Masters degree in Food/industrial microbiology in 1995. In 2001 She obtained a PhD Degree in Food/Industrial Microbiology from the University of Benin.

Prof (Mrs) R.E Ohenhen also had foreign educational training.  She did a  PhD course on Confocal Light Microscopy – Fundamentals and Biological Applications in the  University of Amsterdam, Netherlands, Water Quality Control in Water Supply course in UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education, Netherlands,  Leeds Applied Food Microbiology course in  Weetwood Hall Hotel and Conference Centre, Leeds United Kingdom.

The academic and administrative profile of Prof (Mrs) R.E Ohenhen has been wonderful. She joined the services of Ambrose Alli University as a graduate Assistant in 1993 and was promoted steadily to the rank of a Professor in 2012.  She has held several administrative positions, some of which include:

  • Head of Department, Department of Microbiology.
    • Coordinator for Foundation Program, Department of Microbiology.
    • Joint Council/Senate Committee on Honorary Awards – Senate Representative.
    • Vice Chancellor nominee to appraisal board, Ambrose Alli University.
    • Examination officer, Department of Microbiology.
    • Internal examiner for PhD, and MSc Oral Examination.
    • School of Postgraduate Studies Representative on panels for MSc and PhD Degree Oral Examinations.
    • Sabbatical appointment (2011 – 2012) teaching microbiology at Benson Idahosa University, Benin City, Nigeria
    • External examiner for higher degree examination: Edo State University, Uzairue; Benson Idahosa University, Benin City and Federal University of Technology, Akure.
    • External Examiner for Undergraduate degree examination: Delta State University, Abraka, and Samuel Adegbojega University, Ogwa.
    • External assessor for the post of Associate professor (Reader) and Professor across tertiary institution(Universities ) in the country.
    • Supervision of several Post graduate students

Prof. (Mrs) Ohenhen also served in some professional capacity which includes:

  • Director, Centre For Entrepreneural Studies
  • Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences,
  • Head, Department of Microbiology Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, Nigeria
  • Board Director, Edo State Hospital Management Board, Edo State, Nigeria

Prof. (Mrs) Ohenhen has published over 40  articles in local and international journals of very high reputation and has received several awards some of which includes:

  1. Ambrose Alli University Alumni Society, Merit Award.
  2. Faculty of Basic and Applied Sciences, Benson Idahosa University, Award of Honor.
  3. Faculty of Life Sciences Students Association, Ambrose Alli University, Award of Excellence.
  4. Faculty of Life Sciences Students Fellowship, Ambrose Alli University, Award of Honor.
  5. Ladies of St Mulumba, Ikpoba Sub Council, Benin City, Award as Excellent Achiever.
  6. National Association of Microbiology Students, Ambrose Alli University, Award of Honor.
  7. National Association of Women in Academics, Award of Honor.
  8. Nigerian Medical Laboratory Science Students Association (NIMELSA), Award of Honor.

               Prof (Mrs) Ohenhen also received grants from:

  1. Society for Applied Microbiology, Presidents Fund Grant to present research papers at the American Society for Microbiology Conferences held in Boston, New Orleans, Philadelphia, and San Francisco, USA.
  2. Society for Applied Microbiology, Scientific Meeting Grant to present a research paper at a Society for Applied Microbiology Summer Conference held in Dublin, Ireland.

 Prof. (Mrs ) Ohenhen  is a member of several professional Bodies locally and  internationally such as  :

  1. Member, Society for Applied Microbiology, U.K.
  2. Member, Society of General Microbiology, U.K.
  3. Member, American Society for Microbiology.  U.S.A.
  4. Member, Nigerian Society for Microbiology

Prof. Mrs R.E Ohenhen is a lover of academics and research. She has attended over fifteen (15)  conferences in Nigeria, United States of America, Cardiff, Ireland and Warwick (UK)

She indeed likes reading, while also derives pleasures in playing tennis.

Prof (Mrs) R.E Ohenhen is happily maried to Arc. Sonnie Ohenhen. and the marriage blessed with  four Children.

She is the 6th  Inaugural lecturer in the Faculty of Life Sciences and the 5th in the Department of Microbiology.
