Biochemistry

The department offers a degree programme leading to the award of the Bachelor of Science (Biochemistry).

PHILOSOPHY

The training in Biochemistry is designed to cover all physio-chemical and molecular processes upon which life is based. This means exposing students to an understanding of the physical and chemical nature of the substances in living things, particularly in our environment molecular basis as their interaction with one another.

OBJECTIVES

The  above philosophy is pursued with the following objectives:

  1. To provide a good background in physical, biological and mathematical sciences and their interrelationship especially as it affect the study of living things.
  2. To provide appropriate training to students from other departments in the university who may require a working knowledge of Biochemistry.
  3. To provide the student with the necessary skills  required for specialization training in basic and applied biochemistry.
  4. To prepare the student to adequately take up opportunities and contribute meaningfully to technological innovations in medical and pharmaceutical research, Food processing, Nutrition research, Brewing, Agriculture and Biotechnology
  5. To prepare the student to serve in hospital laboratories, marketing and commerce, and in government organizations such as in scientific sections of civil services, public health, laboratories and research institutes.
  6. An industrial training programme is carefully designed to help the student to build on areas of interest and expand his or her practice skills, with a view to encourage self-employment.
