PHILISOHPY 

The Department of English has as its general philosophy the study of language and literature. As language and literature are the products of the dynamics of culture and cultural modes, the department equips its students with a strong awareness of themselves and the world around them. It prepares students for the award of the degree in English (Language and Literature) which is meant to give them relevance and assure them a place in society.

OBJECTIVES

  1. To give students a good grounding and effective control of the English Language and foster in them a keen literary sensibility, leading to the acquisition of the necessary tools to respond appropriately to any literary stimulus.
  2. To familiarise graduates with major landmarks in English and African Literature.
  3. To produce competent teachers of Literature and the English Language as well as sensitise the possibilities of self-actualisation in the theatre, the electronic and other media.
  4. To adequately prepare students for post-graduate studies in literature and/or the English Language.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Direct Entry Requirements
A’ Level passes in subjects which should include English Literature and at least one Arts subjects.

U.M.E. Entry Requirements
O’ Level credits in at least five subjects including English Language and English Literature, plus at least a pass in a Science subject.   

U.M.E. Subjects
English Language and at least two relevant Arts subjects which must include English Literature.
