Physics

The department of Physics offers two degree programmes leading to the award of a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics, denoted B.Sc. (Physics) and Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Physics (Geophysics) and denoted by B.Sc. (Applied Physics) (Geophysics).

PHILOSOPHY

The importance of Physics and Geophysics in the development of modern technology cannot be over-emphasized. Accordingly, the degree programme are geared towards the in depth acquisition of the right type of skills, scientific knowledge, competence and norms in both the theoretical and the experimental aspects of the subjects and its related disciplines. This will ensure that the products of the programme dream of a sound scientific base technological and industrial advancement. The programmes aims at providing opportunity for students to opt for any of the two degree programmes offered in the department.

 OBJECTIVES

A.  The degree programmes aim at providing the student with an intellectual environment favourable for the study of pure physics, Geophysics and related disciplines so that at the end of the training the products will be capable of:

  1. Pursuing research in pure/applied physics in any chosen field.
  2. Working in several public establishments such as Meteorology departments of Telecommunication, Aviation, Energy centres, surveying and medical physics, as well as in private establishment, mining and steel industries and manufacturing plants, and in the development of new materials and other sources of energy.
  3. Teaching in order to maintain the important cycle of imparting knowledge to future generation of Physicists and Geophysicists.
  4. Working in supervisory/advisory capacity in industries and other productive sectors of the economy.
  5. Converting into the engineering fields in such areas as Electrical Engineering, Computer Technology, etc.

B.  Physics, being fundamental to the proper understanding of other areas of science, the Department also aims at providing service courses for students in other departments/units of the university.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

UME
The minimum admission requirement for the four-year programme in Physics  and Applied Physics (Geophysics) are five SSCE/GCE credit level passes (or their equivalents) in English Language, Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry in the examination.

Direct Entry
The minimum admission requirements for the three-year programme (direct entry) are GCE ‘A’ level passes (or their equivalents) in Physics and Mathematics in addition to GCE ‘O’ level credits (or their equivalents) in at least English Language, Physics, Chemistry and other subject with both results being obtained at not more than two sittings and provided no subject is counted twice. Appropriate passes in the NCE examination may be accepted.

Physiology

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The broad objectives of the programme in Physiology is to provide a sound scientific basis for the training of doctors and allied health personnel.  It is the objective of this department to teach Physiology which will enable the students grasp adequately the normal functioning of the human body.  The reason comes into sharp focus when the normal functioning is compared with altered physiological conditions encountered during clinical studies.  The student is eventually expected to be able to apply this knowledge to health care delivery.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

At the end of the course in Physiology the student should be able to:

  1. demonstrate adequate knowledge of the physiological basis of medical practice;
  2. demonstrate sound knowledge in Physiology with a view to possible scientific investigations in Physiological sciences;
  3. apply the science of physiology in everyday life; and
  4. recognise pathophysiological conditions.

Political Science

PHILOSOPHY

The philosophy of the department is to train and produce political scientists who will be constantly engaged in self reappraisal and critical re-examination on the mode of the organization of society in particular. This is with a view to creating political scientist whose major focus will be to identify, analyze and find solutions to the political problems of society so that a better and more humane society can be attained. The department intends to produce committed patriotic pan Nigerian and African scholars who will in turn bring these values to bear on the political leadership the country and the citizenry. The department also extends its visions beyond the creation of critical awareness and the mere reflection of political study to functional and development – oriented research. This is to enable students acquire the skills and techniques that would make them relevant to current job demands in the market.

OBJECTIVE

The B.Sc (Political Science) Degree Programme aims at producing graduates who are able to assist in tending the solution of political problems that affect the society at large. Especially I the objectives of the Department of Political Science would be;

  1. To offer a broad background instruction in the dynamics of politics and government with particular reference to Nigeria and Africa.
  2. To produce competent personnel for the diverse needs of the public services and private establishments.
  3. To encourage cross-national comparisons of political phenomena particularly between developed and under-developed political systems.
  4. To provide solid foundations for students who may wish to pursue higher studies in Political Science.


In order to achieve these objectives the Political Science programme focuses on clearly defined areas of specialization such as Public Administration, Policy Analysis, international Relations, Theory and Methodology, Comparative Politics and African and National Politics.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Direct Entry Requirements
a)  Candidates for Direct Entry admission shall possess five credits passes in the SSCE or GCE or its equivalent as in (a) in UME Entry, of which at least two or three shall be at the advanced level. One of the subjects passed at the advanced level must be government.

OR

b)  A diploma with at least a merit pass from Ambrose Alli University or any other recognized University or Tertiary Institution in the following areas; Political Studies, Public Administration, Social Works, Criminology, Mass Communication, International Studies and Business administration.

U.M.E. Entry Requirements
c)  Candidates for admission into the four-year degree programme in Department of  Political Sciences should posses a senior secondary school certificate or General Certificate of Education or its equivalents, with at least five credit passes which include English Language and Government/History with at least a pass in Mathematics (obtained at no more than two sittings).

In addition, candidates must have acceptable pass mark in the following UME Subjects; English Language, Government, Economics and any one other Arts subject.

Psychology

PHILOSOPHY

The philosophy of psychology is to produce a flow of gradate in Psychology with an enthusiasm to make their contribution to Nigeria, Africa and world in General.

OBJECTIVES

  1. Develop and improve students understanding of social problem through the efficient use of modern social research techniques.
  2. Develop the student’s potentials for critical observation, understand analysis and synthesis of data on social – psychological problems with the aid of proper research designs that are evoid of bias.
  3. Provide appropriate environment that will lead to better interpersonal and interpersonal understanding with a view to promoting the spirit self-reliance and creativity.
  4. Create an atmosphere for desirable behavioural changes which would help them develop values that are in consonance with the national objective such as had work, probity commitment, patriotism and discipline.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS 

Direct Entry Requirements
a)  In addition to UME admission requirements, candidates for Direct Entry Admission shall possess two General Certificate of Education, Advanced Level passes in two Social Science subjects or its equivalents, provided that such passes are not counted at both levels of the examination.

OR

b)  A diploma Certificate of any recognized University or Tertiary Institution in Social Works, public Administration, Mass Communication, International Studies, Law, Statistics and Criminology with at least a Merit pass or its equivalent.

UME Entry Requirements
a)  Five credit passes at the Senior Secondary School Certificate of Education (or their equivalents) two of which must be social science subjects, of which one shall be English Language. The five credits must have been obtained at not more than two sittings.

In addition, candidates must have acceptable passes in the following UME Subjects; English Language, Biology, Agricultural Science, Economics or Commerce and Government.

Public Administration

PHILOSOPHY

The philosophy of the Department’s Bachelor of Science degree in Public Administration (B.Sc) is to aid the students acquire the knowledge and skills required for the role of middle and top level bureaucrats, as well as managers in Nigeria and the international Community. It also, prepares the students to be conversant with the principles, theories and techniques required for conducting research for the purpose of problem solving and widening the frontiers of knowledge in the area within and relating to the discipline.

The general philosophy is to develop the mind, impart both theoretical and practical knowledge on individual to develop self confidence, be innovative and self ‘reliant in the fields of Administration and Management.

OBJECTIVE

The objectives of the B.Sc. programme are to:

  • To produce personnel that are competent to manage complex relations in the ever changing bureaucracy and growing business environment.
  • Produce middle and top-level bureaucrats, as well as managers for Nigeria and the International Community.
  • Groom administrators’ to possess adequate knowledge and skills for efficient administration of organizations and Societies.
  • Produce problem solvers, skillful in policy initiation, guiding Political Office hoders and policy implementation for the purpose of efficient attainment of national goals and those of the International Community.
  • Produce graduates verse in administrative principles and theories, which serve as a foundation for studies for higher degrees in Public Administration and related disciplines.

DURATION
The full-time programme is designed to last a minimum of four years for UME candidates and three years for direct entry candidates.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS 

A candidate seeking admission into the programme must possess the following

(a) UME Admission
At least five (5) credit grades in SSCE or O/L GCE or NECO or NABTEB, which must include English Language, Mathematics, Economic, Government/History and any other subject at not more than two sittings. An approved minimum JAMB score by the authorities of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma will also required.

(b) Direct Entry Admission
A candidate for direct entry admission must possess Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma diploma with at least credit grade in Banking and Finance or Accounting or Business Management (or Administration) in addition to the requirements in (a) above.

A Polytechnic diploma with at least upper credit grade may also be considered. Besides the requirements in (a) and (b), other qualifications that are considered relevant by the Senate of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma from time to time may also be acceptable for admission.

Religious Management and Cultural Studies

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The aims and objectives of the programme are:

  1. To give students an in-depth study leading to the understanding and knowledge of the phenomena of religion in all its varieties and manifestations. 
  2. To offer courses in the field of history and phenomanology of religious and cultures, theology and philosophy, aiming at the understanding and interpretation of African Religion, Christianity, Islam and other old religions, separately and as far as there has been cross-fertilization between them, particularly, the first three.   
  3. To produce competent personnel for the effective management of religious matters, institutions and cultural affairs.
  4. To produce competent teachers of Religion and social workers in government and non-governmental establishments and institutions.
  5. To adequately prepare students for post-graduate research studies in the area of religious management and cultural studies.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

a)  4-YEAR DEGREE PROGRAMME
In addition to the general University Admission Requirements, candidates are required to possess a minimum of:  

  1. Five credits, at not more than two sittings, to include . English and C.R.K/I.R.K. at Senior Secondary School level or its equivalence, plus
  2.  a pass level in the Joint Matriculation Examination.

b)  3-YEAR DEGREE PROGRAMME

Candidates are required to possess a minimum of:

  1. 3 A/l passes, including Religious Studies (Christian/Islamic), at no more than two sittings, plus 2 credits at the G. C. E. OIL or its equivalence which must include English.
  2. 2 A/l passes, including Religious Studies (Christian/Islamic) at not more than two sittings plus3 credits at G.C. E. OIL or its equivalence which must include English and CRK/IRK at not more than two sittings.
  3. Diploma in Religious Studies or its equivalence, from a recognised University, plus 3 credits at GCE OIL or its equivalence, which must include English and CRK/IRK at not more than two sittings.
  4. Passes in two teaching subjects atthe NCE level, which must include Religious Studies (Christian/Islamic) plus credits in three other subjects at GCE OIL in not more than two sittings.

Sociology

PHILOSOPHY

The Philosophy of this department is to produce graduates of sociology who are well grounded in theory and social research procedures with an enthusiasm to make a career in the discipline.

OBJECTIVES

  1. Develop and improve student’s understanding of the social problems at various stages development and the Nigeria society in particular.
  2. Development the student’s critical judgment, his ability to observe, understand, analyse, and synthesise data on socio-economic problems using social science methods, and on national issues.
  3. Provide appropriate environment that enables the students raise their level of creativity and promote the spirit of self-reliance; and
  4. Create an atmosphere for desirable behavioural changes which would help him to develop values that are in consonance with the national objectives such as hard work probity, commitment, patriotism and discipline.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Direct Entry Requirements
a)  To be eligible for admission into the three-year programme, candidates must possess in addition to the UME requirements, two advanced level subjects from the following: Economics, Government, and Literature in English, CRK, History or Geography.

OR

b)  A Diploma Certificate with a minimum of MERIT Grade in Social Works, Criminology, or in related disciplines such as Political Studies, Law or Public Administration of Ambrose Alli University or other recognized Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria.

Bachelor of Social Works (Part-Time) Five-Year Programme

c)  To be eligible for admission to the programme, candidates must possess five credit passes which must include English Language, and four other Social Science and Arts Subjects in not more than two sittings. Candidates are required to also have a minimum pass grade (P7 or P8) in Mathematics.

Four-Year Programme

d)  To be eligible for admission into the four year programme candidates must have in addition to the requirements contained in (a) above, at least a Merit Pass in Diploma in social Works, Criminology, Public Administration, Political Studies or related areas obtained in the this University or any other recognized Tertiary Institution.

UME Entry Requirements

e)  To be eligible for admission into the four-year programme, prospective candidates must possess at least credit pass in five subjects at SSCE or its equivalents including English Language, Mathematics, one Social Science subject or Art Subject and any other subject in not more than two sittings.


UME Subjects required are English Language, Economics, Government and any other Art subject.

Soil Science

This department offers a degree programme leading to the award of a Bachelor of Agriculture in Soil Science.

Surgery

OBJECTIVES

Generally, the postings in Surgery are aimed at providing the students with an understanding of the scientific basis of the principles and practice of Surgery and acquainting them with the presentation and management of the common range of surgical problems/diseases, with particular reference to the tropics and Nigeria.  At the end of the positing in Surgery, the student should have acquired enough knowledge, skills and attitudes, to enable him:

  1. diagnose and manage rationally common surgical problems. Including making referrals to appropriate centres;
  2. diagnose and manage rationally common surgical emergencies including making timely referral to appropriate centres as necessary;
  3. undertake simple anaesthesia and analgesia in surgical procedures;
  4. work within a health team and acquire leadership qualities; and
  5. practice with high bedside manners and ethical standards including having a deep respect and concern for his patients.

Theatre and Media Arts

PHILOSOPHY

The Department as all other Arts disciplines is fundamentally concerned with Man and his complex nature, in his multifaceted relationships with the world. In particular, it deals with man’s apprehension and interpretation of reality through religion and all its manifestations and philosophy.

OBJECTIVES

The aim of the department is primarily academic. Therefore, it pursues academic studies for its own sake; its primary purpose is discipline to the end that truth may be discovered, established and preserved.

  1. To offer courses in the field of History and phenomenology of religions, theology and philosophy, aiming at the understanding and interpretation of African Religion (AFREL) Christianity, Islam and Asian Religions separately and as far as there has been cross-fertilization between them particularly the firstthree.
  2. To enable students understand the phenomenon and social implications of religion in general and religion in Africa particular.
  3. To produce competent teachers of Religion and Social Workers in government establishments and parastatals.
  4. To adequately prepare students for the post-graduate research studies in Religion.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Four Year Degree Programme

a)   Candidates shall qualify for admission to the Department if they pass the University Matriculation Examination (UME) for that year, and satisfy the other requirements prescribed in the J.A.M.B. Brochure namely: Possess one or more of the following qualifications:

  1. Five Credits at Senior Secondary School Level
  2. The School Certificate or General Certificate of Education Ordinary level with passes at credit level in at least five subjects inclu,ding English Language obtained at not more than two sittings.
  3. Teachers’ Grade II Certificate with credit/merit in at least five subjects at not more than two sittings.

NB: The subjects passed at credit/merit level in (i) to (iii) above must include English Language and Bible Knowledge or’ Islamic Religious Knowledge. The general paper in G.C.E. A/L or its equivalent is NOT accepted in lieu of 0′ Level credit in English Language.

Three Year Degree Proqramme

b)   Five credits in General Certificate of Education, Ordinary Level (at not more than two sittings) at least two of which must be at the G.C.E. Advanced level including Christian Religious Knowledge.

c)   Three passes at the Principal or Advanced Level with SC/GCE . 0′ Level credit passes in two other subjects at not more than two sittings.

d)   Passes in two teaching subjects at the N.C.E. Level plus Three other subjects in G.C.E. ‘O’ Level or equivalent including English Language, General Paper (one of the two N.C.E. subjects must be Religious Studies, Christian or Islamic).

e)   Two passes at the IJMB Examinations or Cambridge Moderated Schools of Basic Studies Terminal Examination or International Baccalaureate from a recognised institution with School Certificate credit or equivalent in three other subjects.

f)   Three papers in (d) above with ‘O’ Level credit passes in two other subjects at not more than two sittings. Five credit passes in School Certificate or G.C.E. at not more than two sittings and either;

  1. Diploma in Religious Studies, University of Ibadan, or
  2. Diploma in Theology, Un!versity of london.

NB: In all cases, one of the All subjects or its equivalent must be Religious Studies, Christian or Islamic, and one of the ‘0’ level credit passes must be English Language
