Plant Science and Biotechnology (Botany)

PHILOSOPHY

The department aims to train biologist in life process in plants and micro organisms as it relates to natural environment, and to harness these natural resources for national development.

OBJECTIVES

  • To produce graduates with the relevant skills and knowledge necessary for productive research and teaching
  • To produce graduate with requisite biological knowledge and techniques necessary for industries such as brewing, food processing and preservation, pharmaceuticals, water works, petro-chemicals, forestry and ecosystem conservation and wood processing.
  • To provide courses in Biological sciences to students of other departments whose degree options require a working knowledge of Botany.

DEGREE OPTION

The department offers a single degree option: B.Sc. (Hons) Botany.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

UME Requirements
In addition to an acceptable score in UME, candidates must have SSCE/GCE ‘O’ level credit passes in at least five subjects including Mathematics, English Language, Biology, Chemistry and any other subject.

Direct Entry Requirements
Candidates for direct admission (200 level) must in addition to (a) above, have two HSC/GCE ‘A’ level passes in Biology or Agricultural Science and Chemistry.

DURATION

The programme will last for four years for those who are coming through UME and three years for those coming in through Direct Entry.
